2014: A Review
Part 1

What a year 2014 has been! We’ve had the good, the bad and the downright ugly. From scandals to expulsions, to marriages and romance to the tragic and heart-breaking. 2014 has been a year to remember. The year started off with such promise with comebacks from big name artists such as Super Junior, Infinite, Exo, Girl’s Generation, Ailee and Sistar to name but a few. We’ve had a plethora of high standard rookie groups debut as well as solo albums from members of our favourite groups.

This year the quality of songs has levelled up, we have funny, sad, bouncy and on the odd occasion, confusing.  So let’s jump straight in and focus upon the awesome songs that have hit the airwaves this year. First up and in no particular order, Vixx’s Error.

VIXX - ERROR

I had high hopes for this song after I saw the teaser and I was in no way disappointed by it. It’s upbeat tempo and awesome vocals from Ken and Leo really gives it an edge. The MV is beautiful and heart breaking and even know when I watch it I burst into tears; Hongbin and Youngji make a really cute couple! And as a bonus, on top of everything else we get to see Hongbin’s rather lovely abs. Who else is with me in starting a petition so he never has to wear a shirt again?

SUPER JUNIOR - EVANESCE

Ah, Super Junior, I must admit I am biased when it comes down to it. I was in love with Mamacita it’s a fun song and the MV is hilarious. This is Love is sweet and I love how they filmed the MV with splitting the stage into parts. None of this prepared me for Evanesce though, the harmonies, the high notes it is literally just perfection.

BTS - WAR OF HORMONE

The last couple of months I’ve had a growing love for BTS and it has only grown larger with the release of War of Hormone. The song is catchy, the rap hooks you and fits well into the overall beat of the song. The MV is adorable and they all look so happy in it while acting super cute!

SISTAR - I SWEAR

Next on the list is I Swear by Sistar, this was the song released after Touch My Body. As much as I wanted to, I just couldn’t really get into that song, it reminded me too much like other songs that they had released. I Swear on the other hand I fell for, it’s catchy, cute and the MV is shows the girls having fun and enjoying summer, it’s a proper summery song.

AOA - LIKE A CAT

AOA released a lot of music in 2014 but by far the best was their latest release Like A Cat, I listened to it a few times and then I found myself humming along to the chorus and before I knew it I was hooked. The MV is well done, there’s just one thing that annoys me and that would be the blatant product placement but apart from that it is awesome.

ORANGE CARAMEL - MY COPYCAT

Onto the next one, this is a bit different from the others, Orange Caramel is a sub-group of After School and their songs are always bouncy and quirky and My Copycat is no exception. The MV is basically a massive game of Where’s Wally where you have to pick out Nana, Lizzy and Raina. It’s different, it’s unique and the song is super catchy!

GD & TAEYANG - GOOD BOY

At the end of the year VIP’s (Big Bang fans) were given a treat, G-Dragon and Taeyang reunited for a new song – Good Boy and what a song it is! Taeyang’s vocals and the club like beat go perfect together and G-Dragon’s rap is practically legendary and this song brings the house down.

There were so many more songs from 2014 that I loved, I’ve mentioned merely a few and I am sure to mention more over the coming weeks. So, look out for Part 2 of my 2014 review as I delve deep into the many scandals that have plagued Kpop this last year!
